Owen S-M. Bethel, President and Managing Director, also serves as Resident Director of the StarCapital Group of Companies, a group of private international investors in the fields of technology and energy.
Prior to establishing Montaque Securities International, Ltd. in 1993, Mr. Bethel was Executive Director of The Bahamas Financial Services Secretariat and The Bahamas Investment Authority, both Government bodies in the Office of the Prime Minister, to promote financial services and investment opportunities in The Bahamas and facilitate investors through the relevant approval process. The agencies also advised the Government on policies, strategies and legislation to be implemented in the respective fields.
Mr. Bethel graduated from Carleton University, Canada in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts in Law and Political Science. He then studied both law and finance and received a Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1982 from University College, University of London, England. Mr. Bethel started his professional career with Credit Suisse both in London and Nassau, and then became Assistant to the Executive Director at both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, Washington, D.C.
Mr. Bethel has participated in numerous international financial and legal conferences. He also served as a contributing editor to several professional manuals on taxation and investments. He was instrumental in the development of legislation for the mutual funds industry and served on the Securities Market Task Force responsible for the creation of a capital/securities market and stock exchange in The Bahamas. His firm successfully launched the first publicly offered domestic mutual fund in The Bahamas.
Mr. Bethel has served as Managing Director of InterTrust Bank Ltd. (1995-2000) and as a Director of Surety Bank & Trust (1996-2002). He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors and Honorary Secretary of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce. He was the recipient of the CIBC/Ernst & Young 1996 Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Centre for Entrepreneurship at the College of The Bahamas. He is currently Chairman of the Antiquities Corporation of The Bahamas, having previously served as Deputy Chairman, and a Director of the Historic Bahamas Foundation. He also serves as Chairman of The Bahamas National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Bahamas Representative on the Executive Board of UNESCO in Paris, France. He is a Director of RBC Finance Corporation of The Bahamas, an affiliate of the Royal Bank of Canada, and Doctors Hospital.
Edison L. Sumner, Director and Chief Operations Officer, holds the professional qualification of Certified Financial Consultant. Having studied at London Guildhall University and City University.
